REID

SEAMLESSLY Blending Function and art

My work combines an experimental spirit with a balance of utility and aesthetic elegance, creating artful pottery that harmonizes decorative and structural elements. This approach results in a satisfying synthesis of utility, surface interest, and contemporary design.

Reid's Artist Statement

My work begins with white stoneware, shaped on the potter’s wheel into functional forms designed for everyday use. I apply original designs to the exterior surfaces using a mono print on clay technique, while the interiors are glazed with food-safe gloss glazes to maintain their practicality. My creative palette spans three distinct approaches: black and white formal line drawings of flowers, either stylized from life or purely imaginative; looser black and white compositions accented with touches of analogous color inspired by neurographic art; and bold, vivid colors layered to create abstract patterns and to evoke emotional resonance.

I am drawn to the balance inherent in my work—the interplay between form and function, structure and surface, contemporary and traditional, perfection and imperfection, rigidity and fluidity. The mono print process uniquely imparts a subtle, tactile texture through the uneven adherence of the print to the clay’s surface. This nuanced quality not only pleases the touch but also embraces the philosophy of wabi sabi, celebrating beauty in imperfection and transience.

Subject matter comes from a place of visual exploration and curiosity. I am constantly inspired by the natural world and abstract forms, always seeking new ways to reimagine them. Movement and texture captivate me: in floral compositions, a tranquil stillness speaks to my minimalist sensibilities; neurographic designs convey an ordered chaos buzzing with energy; and my abstract pieces express intense emotional currents.

My practice is animated by the desire to see familiar elements through fresh perspectives and to compose pieces that enhance daily rituals. By melding artistic exploration with functionality, I strive to create pottery that transforms everyday moments into unique experiences.

The mono print technique allows me to create distinctive surface designs that reflect my original artistic vision. By refining the process, I have minimized the bulky textures typically associated with mono printing, preserving a gentle distressed character that contrasts with sleek black satin details framing each work. This interplay enriches each piece with a contemporary edge while honoring the unique, handcrafted nature of the surface.

Ultimately, my work is a balance of opposites—inviting use and contemplation, simplicity and complexity, tradition and innovation—crafted to engage both the eye and the hand.
